By 25 I was $400,000 in debt with a combination of medical debt from having a preemie, 0 interest credit cards that became my lifeline + a house bought at the peak of the real estate BOOM that had depreciated to be about half the value as what I owed on it!
By 30 I had over a million dollars in the bank & owned our current home free & clear.
Lemme share something that happened in that 5 YEAR GAP that changed EVERYTHING for me:
𝐈 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘: My previous story was one of a VICTIM. It included all the ways LIFE had been UNFAIR to me.
🤱- I didn’t ASK to have a baby 2 months premature!
🏠- I didn’t DESERVE to end up buying at the peak of the market and have it BURST on me right after a break up!
💳-I didn’t know my life would crumble around me and I wouldn’t be able to pay off those credit cards before the 12 months of interest-free was up!
Those were 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐌 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒… and you know, they got me a lot of SYMPATHY when I told them… but you know what they DIDN’T GET ME???
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐘.
SO I had to decide to change the NARRATIVE & TAKE OWNERSHIP in the part that I PLAYED.
🤱- I chose to not have health insurance before being in a relationship that could indeed create a baby (if ya know what I mean 🤭)
🏠- I chose to purchase a home that I could only AFFORD while in a relationship with someone contributing the other 50% of the mortgage. I also chose to commit to something I didn’t know much about and got a loan that was NOT in my favor!
💳- I chose to apply for those credit cards and just ASSUME life was never going to throw me a curve ball.
By taking 𝐎𝗪𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐁𝐋𝐄𝐌, it gave me OWNERSHIP to create the SOLUTION!
Each of those poor decisions were packed with LESSONS that I needed to learn in order to grow into who I am TODAY. They weren’t there to break me, but rather SHAPE ME into someone who would be RESPONSIBLE & DISCIPLINED enough to fulfill the calling God had placed on my life.
If you feel STUCK in a situation that you feel is unfair or holding you back — try looking through a different lens.
𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟:
1.) Where can I take OWNERSHIP of this problem?
2.) What have a learned from this experience that will allow me to do better & give more in the future?
3.) How can I turn this test into a testimony by taking FULL RESPONSIBILITY for creating the SOLUTION?
